I’ve learned that respect isn’t reserved for titles, status, or whoever’s at the top of the room. Whether I’ve worked with celebrities, crew members, vendors, students, clients, family, or colleagues, I believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity, patience, and care.
In the early ’90s, I worked for a man who was, to put it as kindly as I can manage, a bastard and a jackass. He genuinely believed that anyone below “Manager” — and I was a secretary at the time — wasn’t worth his respect, and he treated us accordingly. He turned out to be one of my greatest teachers: he showed me, in vivid detail, exactly who I refused to become.
